Activities in the Sechelt Inlet Area

Bird Point offers a rare glimpse into days past in Coastal British Columbia, when the Sunshine Coast was without roads, traffic noise, and the frenetic pace of 21st century living.

Accessible only by boat or float plane, our group retreat provides a soul-renewing wilderness experience, mixing deep forests with wild ocean shores and a rich diversity of animal and birdlife to reacquaint yourself with.

Kayaking

Many of our guests arrive as paddling groups on Sechelt Inlet trips. While you can stay at any one of the nine marine campsites in the Sechelt and branching inlets, Bird Point makes a natural base of operations because of our location, comfort, and storage for your goods, especially food. We can meet your group in Porpoise Bay, and transport your gear and coolers to the Retreat, while you enjoy a stress-free paddle through the Sunshine Coast's Inland Sea, perhaps enjoying an overnight island stay before you arrive. Kayaks are available for rent at Tillicum Bay through Pedals and Paddles (you can park your vehicle there and we can do a pick up of gear). Let us know if you would like us to arrange rentals for your group. Must be able to perform basic paddling skills and should be able to do a wet exit/self-rescue. We can help arrange for a group lesson at the start of your trip if required. Bird Point area waters are rated Class 1, so very safe for novice kayakers. Our boat is available for rescue if required.

Hiking

Bird Point Retreat offers miles of trails, hand-cut through our 124-acre property. Trails are private, and range from moderate to difficult, including an ascent trail to the top of the ridge behind the property for commanding views of the Inlet. Please bring suitable hiking footwear, and boots for intertidal areas if preferred.

Shoreline Explorations

1 mile of waterfront and Sechelt Inlet's only saltwater lagoon means Bird Point can keep you enthralled for days (most guests say they did not plan for enough time on their trip). Marbled Murrelets from the nearby Caren Range old-growth forest visit the shores, bombing into the water haphazardly; oyster-catchers, with their distinctive red beaks and feet and gimlet yellow eyes peck and hunt along the water's edge; herons fish serenely; eagles call out and watch for fish from high in cliffside treetops. Curious seals bob in the bays, watching humans watching them while early mornings provide glimpses of coyotes, rambunctious river otters and occasionally our area resident bobcat.

Diving

Arranged through our partners at Sunshine Coast Tours or Porpoise Bay Charters, Sechelt Inlet offers what Jacques Cousteau called some of the world's finest cold-water diving. Cruise the HMCS Chaudiere, a 118-metre retired Canadian Forces destroyer escort lying off Kunechin Point, or explore the tide-rich currents of Tzoonie Narrows or Agammemnon Channel. Gear available. Minimum numbers apply.
